Leave your blinds or curtains cracked so natural light can enter.Go to bed early (get 7 to 8 hours of sleep). If you’re unsure how much time to give yourself, I suggest implementing the morning routine on a weekend to see how long it takes you and then subtracting that from the time you must be ready for the day and add 15 to 20 minutes of padding. I find that two hours gives me adequate time to do everything without feeling rushed. I generally give myself two hours to complete my morning routine. How early you should wake up ultimately boils down to how much time you need and what time you must be ready for work or whatever other obligations your day demands. I acknowledge that in many ways, this can be the hardest item on this list but after you do it several days in a row, it will become second nature. For this reason, you cannot wake up at the last minute or snooze your alarm until 8:30. You can’t have a successful morning routine without allowing sufficient time to accomplish it. This one may go without saying but I wanted to include it because this is probably the most important item on this morning routine checklist. You can skip to the bottom of this article to receive the downloadable file. Now, let’s go through each step in the morning routine checklist. Build Healthy Habitsīy implementing a repetitive routine, the things you set out to accomplish will become healthy habits. Sharpen Your Mindīy implementing a morning routine that includes healthy habits such as exercising, drinking water or having a healthy breakfast, your brain can focus and get prepared for the day. This is also why I like to use my morning routine to plan and prioritize the other items I must accomplish that day. Similarly, when you tackle looming items on your to-do list first thing in the morning, it can help reduce stress later in the day. Lower Your Stress LevelsĬlinical studies have shown that repetitive routines can help reduce anxiety and stress. On the other hand, if you tell yourself you will do it later, other things that are “more important” will tend to arise and interfere with your goals. For instance, if you want to lose weight or start exercising consistently and you make a point to hit the gym or go for a walk before you do anything else, you are far more likely to do it. Make Progress Toward Your GoalsĪs the Brian Tracy book, Eat That Frog preaches, by accomplishing the things you don’t want to do or have been procrastinating on first thing in the morning, you are more likely to do them and consistently make progress toward your goals. When you wake up a bit earlier and take time in the morning to tackle some of the items on your to-do list, or even just list what needs to get done that day, you are more likely to accomplish them. Below are some benefits of establishing a morning routine. This morning routine has changed my health, appearance, productivity and dare I say…life? If you’re looking to be more productive and improve your personal wellbeing, there’s no better place to start than with your morning routine. Things I wanted to get done that day would be pushed to the evening, and when something else came up, or I ended up working late (which happened often), those items I hoped to accomplish never got done. While I was able to successfully complete my so called routine in less than twenty minutes, I would spend the first hour or so of work trying to figure out what I needed to do for the day and gradually caffeinating myself to life. There was a time when my “morning routine” consisted of waking up at the last possible minute, turning on the coffee pot, scrambling to get ready for work and nearly running out the door. For this reason, I strongly encourage you to implement as many of these steps as you can, ideally all of them. However, all of the items I have included are scientifically shown to be beneficial to your productivity, health and wellbeing and are things I have made a point to include in my own morning routine. This checklist includes many steps and I acknowledge that you may not be able to complete all of them every single day, especially when you have children and other responsibilities to handle in the morning.
